Description
The Labrador Retriever is a muscular dog that is solid and slightly longer than tall. It has a short, easy-care, water-resistant double coat that does not have any waves. They are good swimmers. There are two types of Labs - English and American.


Size
Adult male Labrador Retrievers are 22-24 inches tall and weigh 60-75 pounds. Adult female Labs are 21-23 inches tall and weigh 55-70 pounds.


Coat
The Labrador Retriever has a dense double coat. The soft, weather-resistant undercoat provides protection from water and the cold.


Color
The standard colors of the Labrador Retriever are black, chocolate, and yellow.


Temperament
The Labrador Retriever is an affectionate and patient dog. They are highly intelligent, loyal, lively and good-natured. They love to play, especially in water. They are good with children and other pets.


Care
The short, smooth coat is easy to groom. Brush or comb the coat to remove excess hair on a regular basis. Dry shampoo or bathe only when necessary.


Exercise
Labrador Retrievers are very energetic and need daily exercise. A long brisk walk or large play area is advised to keep active. This breed also gains weight easily so exercise is also good to keep their body trim.


Training
Since they are an intelligent breed they are fairly easy to train.


Shedding
This breed are average shedders.


Allergies
Some Labrador Retrievers have mild skin allergies.


Barking & Howling
They are know as alarm barkers to let you know when someone is approaching.


Life Expectancy
A well cared for Labrador Retriever can live 10-12 years.


Health
This breed is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia as well as eye problems like PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy). Purchase from a reputable breeders that checks for these type of issues.
